St Martin in the Fields
An excellent study day at The Royal Society of Medicine, celebrating the 30th birthday of the Emergency Medicine section. Some very thought provoking speakers.
Then I met up with W, and we went to a concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Moonlight and Mozart to Candlelight - very gentle, excellent music - great for winding down at the end of the day. I was interested in the name, since there are NO fields around Trafalgar Square these days, but a glance at Wikipedia tells me that there has been a church on the site since at least 1222. Even in 1542, when Henry VIII rebuilt it, there were fields here, "an isolated site between the City of Westminter and the City of London".
The present church was built in the early 18th Century, and is large and ornate. It makes a lovely concert venue - this was our first visit, but I hope it won't be our last.
