Up Helly Aa

Today, the last Tuesday in January, is Up Helly Aa in Lerwick, Shetland.
Exactly 5 years ago, His Lordship and I flew up to Shetland to witness the event. It has left an indelible memory with me and is possibly the most 'hairs on the back of the neck standing up event' in my life.

And so, short of returning again, the Shetland Island council have thoughtfully made it possible to watch the event online at 60North TV while keeping warm and dry in the comfort of one's lowland home.

This morning I watched as the Guizer's squad paraded into the Market Cross to stand around the board on which was pinned this year's Up Helly Aa proclamation.
Tonight at 7.30 pm when the maroon is fired signalling the lighting of the flares and the start of the procession pulling the galley to its fiery end, I will be watching.
