Another look down the microscope
Another day of foul weather, another session peering down the microscope.
The main photograph shows the tip of the "tongue" of a drone fly, another name for a hover fly. The tongue is equipped with a rake like structure that helps the hoverfly to collect the pollen on which it feeds.
The "extra" is the muscular poison sac of a wasp which pumps venom through the sting when the wasp attacks.
