Palais de Danse
This is all that's left of the Palais de Dance (later a bingo hall) at Fountainbridge, which was demolished recently. Guess what's going to be built in its place? MORE student flats! It feels like every space that opens up in town at the moment becomes student flats or a hotel. Lots of lovely square blocks that lack character and all start to look the same...
You can read more about the history of the place here and there's a picture of the interior in the 50s here
Whenever I've seen it mentioned online there are always loads of comments from people about how their parents or grandparents met there, or they worked there, or someone they know played in a band (on the revolving stage!) there. So much has happened in this small space, and you can almost feel all the memories and history oozing from the earth! I think it's a real shame that they couldn't even keep the facade, and it was bulldozed along with the rest of it. Just another piece of Edinburgh's history lost forever...
