Funicular railways... wait wait NOW

There are three in Lisbon and although we have walked two taking a ride means buying a ticket elsewhere. The one near to this apartment we believe is called Lavra, another Gloria the third is Bica. They tend to look weary, worn and wonderful hardly surprising when you see the steep hills.

A warm sunny day and a trip to the botanical garden which can be seen from the apartment across the hill although on arrival it was closed for renovation. Looking down the hill we could see the river in the distance and another trip down to look at the market of tiny food outlets. It was much busier today and looked fantastic and felt exciting. All nationalities sat around eating the wide variety of food available. Once revived I looked for something to eat and decided on pork croquette with a pickled salad. I was given one of those contraptions that blink loudly once the food is ready. When waiting it was interesting to watch the young men in the kitchen working hard to produce a trays of food, such concentration, I do like to see care taken when preparing food. (A feel good factor).

We shared the 3 croquettes, just enough for the two of us and watched another couple tackle octopus, the guy offered John some! I'm trying that next time. The chap had a piece on a roll covered in a sauce, his partner was eating a risotto with bits on the top.

The fresh food side of the market was busy, not with fruit and veg but coins, stamps and post cards. What a great idea when the stalls are closed the area was busy with collectors.
