Good Night....Winter
Spring is almost here and winter leaves our fair shores yet again. The colours and cold have been magical and it seemed fitting to bid it farewell by living it up at the August Luna Markets located at the Queen Victoria Market Place in the centre of Melbourne.
On a mission, I headed to the markets to take my first portrait shot. Logic was, this would be a crowded place with interesting people - perfect (and I would have my obligatory 4 shots for the month)! Turns out, I'm way to easily distracted ..... by everything!!
I photographed a guy who was stirring giant vats of meatballs, but ended up in conversation about the detailed artwork featuring on his left arm and deleted my other shots of him in favour of his tatoo.
There were the people at the pretzel stand....but I couldn't take the photo and eat....
There was the jazz band: They came out blurry - apparently dancing does not assist the photographers steady hand. Who'd have thought??
And there was the guy on stilts but he was all dressed in black and white, and we all know I don't take black and white photos.
I considered the silent disco crowd, but it doesn't seem right to photograph people cool enough to attend a silent disco in an open air environment. I thought about asking them but I remembered the element of surprise when someone taps you on the shoulder at one of these events and didn't want to upset anyone.
Finally, there was the guy at the Argentine Grill working this amazing BBQ set up, so I photographed him and this blip is the result. You see, I took a shot amidst bellowing smoke as he was shoveling coals from a giant drum onto the BBQ. As such, he's not visable at all, but I thought this was a very cool effect and I was quite pleased with it - wish I knew how I did it.
So alas, we have 4 blips for the month and I got to eat some great food and listen to some cool Wednesday winter night music, but still no portraits.
Maybe Spring will bring me some luck :)
