Horse Memorial
This beautiful statue was erected in Port Elizabeth to commemorate the more than 300 000 horses that died in the Anglo -boer war (1899-1902) These horses were shipped from all over the world, including Britain, Australia and the USA, with the majority landing in PE. I love the expression in the horse's eyes and the look of compassion of the soldier.
The inscription reads:
THE GREATNESS OF A NATION
CONSISTS NOT SO MUCH UPON THE NUMBER OF ITS PEOPLE
OR THE EXTENT OF ITS TERRITORY
AS IN THE EXTENT AND JUSTICE OF ITS COMPASSION
