Golden Girl

This Golden Girl is one of Newcastle's best known figures.  She poses on top of the clock outside The Northern Goldsmiths on the corner of Pilgrim Street and Blackett Street and is based on Venus.   

She is 82 years old and has a twin sister in Westgate Road where there used to be another branch of the shop.  She is covered in 24 carat gold leaf.

The clock is a recognised meeting place in the city centre in a tradition that dates back to World War II where servicemen would meet their sweethearts.
