Family life
Remember the film Best Exotic Marigold hotel? (Older people seeking new life in India.)
Well guess what? It’s cheaper to live here for a week than stay a week in an hotel in Edinburgh, London or a residential home.
Yes there are millionaire homes around, Cliff Richards has one a few miles away, but for ordinary Bajans and tourists the cost of living is below that of the UK. The beaches are free , buses are cheap and fresh fruit, vegetables and fish are plentiful. Oh yes, and unlike Jamaica it’s very safe.
No…we are not thinking of moving here.
The buzzword in tourism these days is eco-tourism and heritage and the island Wildlife Reserve ticks both boxes.
We visited it today at feeding time.
But the first animals we saw were deer.
“I don’t believe it!” I hissed to M as we stood there watching a dozen deer tucking into chopped up fruit and vegetables.
“If I wanted to photograph deer I could do that in the garden at home.”
Fortunately other animals emerged - tortoises, crocodiles, rabbits, peacocks,
terrapins, snakes, iguanas, and parakeets.
But monkeys were the star attraction though locals regard them as vermin - they pick mangoes, dig up sweet potatoes, steal bananas (one reason they have to be picked before they are ripe) and generally cause a nuisance.
However, they are very photogenic.
