Female Bufflehead Duck

This little beauty entertained me for quite a while this morning. She would dive down, be underwater for several seconds and then pop up somewhere else. I tried getting some shots of the "dive and pop" but had no luck. I did learn to watch bubbles appear as she was moving along, but guessing when and where she popped up was a challenge.

I am determined to get a shot of the male one of these days. He is gorgeous and a challenge to shoot. His coloring looks black and white, but on closer inspection the black is a deep purple and green tones. I will have to find a cloudy day to do this. 

I am grateful that so many varieties of ducks winter over in our neck of the woods.
