Sunrise Waikuku Beach

The sun looks a little odd, because a pall of smoke is lying across the horizon from the wildfires on the Port Hills. The fires continue to rage, 11 homes lost now, and hundreds evacuated. Some people still don't know whether they still have a home, or whether it's gone.

Beautiful morning, no wind, though it's got up again now. Fingers crossed the fire doesn't flare again tonight.  The firefighters are saying it will be weeks before they can be sure it's really out.

Two extras
Two very brave girls braved the cold water and had a swim at sunrise - the guy with them sat on the beach wrapped in a blanket!

There was a big flock of terns there too - they weren't so keen on a harrier flying overhead.
