On Golden Pond
I think this is a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus), not to be confused with Brandt's Cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus), which I have. Didn't realize we had more than one kind around here but I should have known better. I noticed several things different -- the orange throat and the fact that this cormorant rides a little higher in the water. The Brandt's cormorant reminds me of a water snake since not much of its body shows and its long neck looks very snakelike at first glance. I'm actually quite bad at bird ID so I could be all wrong. If anyone has better information on which cormorant is which I'd appreciate a correction. In any event, they're both quite fascinating to watch.
