fings ain't wot they used to be....

Every house in that row behind has it's own drying line, across the road from the front door.    The public drying green used to be a very common feature - and a social place for the housewives to meet as well as get their washing dried.

It's good to see that several of the lines here are still in use.

This is Walkerburn, built by the mill owners in the 19th century.   It's built on the valley side with almost every house facing south for the sun.     Now that the mills have gone, it's mostly a place where people sleep, and work elsewhere.
