Huhu grub..

Kicked an old log on the beach and a few of these fellows crawled out.

These are the larvae of the Huhu beetle. They eat rotten wood for two to three years, then enter the pupa stage for 25 day's emerging from the log as flying adult beetles.

Fat grubs were favoured food of the Maori who ate them raw yum!
