The last successful invader of England
William of Orange, 5th November 1688, he landed at the southern English port of Brixham. and while he did indeed come with an invading army and so it was actually an invasion, he was welcomed as he had been invited to depose the unpopular King James V11
This is his story King Billy
For some reason he is depicted in this statue as a Roman Conqueror.
An interesting aside here is the legend surrounding the sculptor of the gilded king. It is widely believed that the artist, a Dutchman by the name of Peter Scheemaker, committed suicide when he realised he’d omitted the king’s stirrups. The slightly less dramatic truth is that the statue was clearly designed to show King Billy riding in the classical style – ie bareback – and that the sculptor actually died of old age the best part of fifty years later. The misplaced rumour may have been muddled over the years with the untimely death of Hull sculptor William Day Keyworth, who was found shot in his workshop near Spring Bank in 1902. He had business worries which led to his suicide.
