The top feeder, which the big Pileated Woodpeckers prefer, was empty this morning, so this bird, which usually feeds upright while using its tail as a brace, improvised!

The disadvantage of this feeding position is all the crumbs that fall on your chest... not very dignified. I've added an extra of the same woodpecker, taken from a different angle.

Other than this bit of bird-watching, it's been a day of post-vacation catching up on laundry, emails, and other routine matters, as well as refining the details of our next jaunt. "Chance snow showers" continues to be in the weather forecast, but I hope they don't materialize!
