Strange signage

Last day of August - can't believe it really. Anyway I was a bit perplexed by this sign. I pass the spot every day and have never seen it before and can't understand why it's there.
There's no road or pavement work going on so no need to divert pedestrians anywhere. Just a random sign on a lamppost in a busy Glasgow street.
