HARBOURING THOUGHTS

The storms of this week have removed much of the golden sand around Filey to expose workings of the past. During low tides remains of the Roman Harbour at Spittles can often be seen.
Below the current seawall are the wooden remains of structures put in place to enable said sea wall to be constructed. This image shows two of the workings and the old B&W image shows the wall being constructed with a crane in 1890.
In 1882, a Government Committee on the use of convict labour considered Dover and Filey to construct a huge fortified naval base, with convicts providing the labour for twelve years. This proposal would have subsumed the town and required the construction of a huge prison. Luckily Dover won.
Talking of winning, no joy again for Boro . . . waltzing our way to relegation. In Aitor we trust . . . but he is pushing it a bit.
