American Gothic by Grant Wood

I have always loved this painting and it was a great thrill to see the original today at the Royal Academy's exhibition; America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930's. Wood used his dentist and his sister as models and it is thought that he wanted to make a positive statement about rural values at a time when America was suffering from poverty and political uncertainty.
