the Bridle Path

When the early European settlers arrived at the Port of Lyttelton in the 1850's, they needed a pathway to ferry their supplies by horse, up and over the Port Hills to the settlement of Christchurch.

And so the Bridle Path was constructed, a steep route up 350 metres from Lyttelton, and down just as steeply into the Heathcote Valley, as seen above.

Beautiful day for a walk on this historic path!
