Pilgrims

Polonnaruwa is another ancient city. It’s about 2 hours from Sigiriya. I shared the journey there with a German guy who was staying at the same guest house in Sigiriya. After being dropped off at the guest house in Polonnaruwa I hired a bicycle to cycle into the town and around the ruins.

There’s a huge lake which was constructed around the same time as the ancient city was at its prime – 1200. There are historic buildings and ruins scattered over several kilometres. Some are temples, others are Royal remains connected to the dynasty that ruled the area.


There were lots of Sri Lankan visitors to the site, many of them wearing white, the holy colour. This shot is at the Royal palace.
