To crochet or not to crochet?

I'm trying to teach myself how to crochet. I have this romantic notion of sitting on the sofa during the winter months, crocheting myself a granny square blanket......hmmm, we'll see!

My brain is now puddled & I have no idea what I'm doing or what it's supposed to look like but it kind of looks ok to me! Long way off a granny square though!
