River orange, filter clear

In the field in the dry season laying out camera traps to capture interesting wildlife, but preoccupied at the start looking for non-muddy water. DeeAnn has an amazing Platypus system that can turn muddy orange water clear, cool and safe. It tasted refreshing and sharp with lemon juice from trees someone had planted in the community forest area. The availability of clean water put a different spin on being here as I had been worried about drying up like a shrivelled groundnut. The dry season means thinner vegetation so there is a lot of exposure to the hot sun, and it doesn't take much exertion to start feeling decidedly squiffy.

Sleeping under a fly sheet on a cool evening, yelling into a satellite phone so colleagues know I'm alive, selecting the best locations to lay out photo traps of wildlife tomorrow, full on rice and beans. Wasps drove us away from bathing in a stagnant stream pool, mosquitoes divebombed dinner and I had stomach cramps. But overall this is a decent Saturday night.
