Station

I travelled from Kandy north to Jaffna today. From Kandy I took a tuk tuk to Polgahawela station. It was about an hour and a half. From there I took the train to Jaffna. The scenery was nice – lots of rice fields, trees and other farmland. It was mostly flat so not as spectacular as the journey from Ella to Kandy. This is one of the stations we stopped at. After passengers had got on and off, the train went backwards for several hundred meters before moving onto a parallel track. It then stopped opposite this platform and waited for the southbound train to arrive at the station so our train could leave on the single track. The people here are waiting for the southbound train.

I spent some of the time at the door of the train taking in the best views. I also talked to two Sri Lankan men who live in Australia who were sitting opposite me. They were going to Jaffna as they were organising fundraising for one of the Jaffna hospitals involving people cycling from Colombo to Jaffna.

My friends F and T have been living in Jaffna for about 6 months. F picked me up from the station. It’s great to see them.
