Poor man's Bible

Wall paintings in medieval churches were known as the "Poor man's Bible" as they were intended as a way of showing Bible stories to illiterate parishioners. Most of them were lost during the Reformation but some - like these in St Agatha's Church near Richmond - were whitewashed over and rediscovered in the 19th century.
