The Magnificent Seven

I enjoyed my first stewarding session at the Greek Chapel in West Norwood Cemetery. It took a while for me to learn which parts of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries were illustrated on the carousel, but I got there in the end.

The Magnificent Seven are:

Kensal Green - 1832
West Norwood Cemetery - opened in 1837 (also the first Gothic cemetery)
Highgate - 1839
Abney Park - 1840
Nunhead - 1840
Brompton - 1840
Tower Hamlets - 1841

These large cemeteries were established to ease overcrowding in the inner parishes of the city.

On this blip, from left to right:
- the arched entrance to West Norwood Cemetery
- the Stearns tomb from Nunhead Cemetery (it should be the Doulton tomb - I spoke to the creator of the carousel and he admitted the mistake; the Stearns tomb is made from Doulton terracotta, but isn't the Doulton tomb - oops!)
- the mausoleum of Sir Henry Tate, West Norwood
- St Stephen's Chapel (the Greek chapel in which the carousel stands), West Norwood
- the Anglican chapel, Nunhead
- War Memorial commemorating both world wars, Tower Hamlets
- the large spire is the Westwood monument, Tower Hamlets

The visitors had great fun turning the carousel round by the handle to view the silhouettes on the walls of the chapel.
