Around the corner of Veerhaven you arrive on the Westerkade along the river Maas. Since 1997 you can see here a statue in bronze of Czar Peter the Great (Russian name Pyotr Alexyevich Romanov) from the artist Leonid Baranov.

During his life he travelled a lot and also lived some time in Holland to study the flourishing shipbuilding including in Zaandam, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

He was skilled in all shipping activities of cabin boy to captain. He stayed with Dutch merchants and wore preferably Dutch clothes.

Here he stands, immortalized in bronze and overlooks the busy river Maas - but not on this Sunday - at the Port of Rotterdam ... ;)
