Arctic Char

These tough fish live under the ice in the lakes of the Arctic and are the prized catches for ice fisherman all over the north. The local restaurants and supermarket have supplied us with delicious dishes of baked, smoked and steamed Char.

Of course, this little one is in a tank at the Arktikum museum in Rovaniemi.  I hope they get to release it when it gets a bit bigger as it can't stay here all its life.

The extra is a cross-section of a slab of ice taken from the river. They cut them out with chainsaws and put up decorative walls in the pedestrian precinct in Rovaniemi.
