The bomber boys

Martin Cole, left (who came from home in Canada for the service), Harry Irons, and Bluey Mottershead, by the airman's memorial stone in Lissett church yard, after the 158 Squadron Bomber Command veterans held their annual memorial service in the village. The 'bomber boys' were based at an airfield just outside the East Yorkshire village, marked now by an impressive memorial sculpture (see my blipfolio...).

It was wonderful to meet these men, who will have lived through unimaginably difficult times in the war, only to have been 'forgotten' for political reasons following the end of WW2.
But as I said to them today, every kid who made an Airfix model kit of a Lancaster or Wellington bomber (me!!) will have been thinking of them. They were quite chuffed at that thought, and then told me they had flown those planes for real... Wow!
