The RAF
In a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by both British and Commonwealth fliers during the Second World War, the RAF and the Bailies of Bennachie held a ceremony at the weekend to commemorate the first two flyers to die in WW2. Pilot Officer Ellard Cummings and his gunner Ronald Stewart crashed on Oxen Craig on 3rd September 1939 the day war was declared.
Also remembered was Pilot Officer Brian Lightfoot whose jet aircraft crashed in the area in 1952.
The ceremony was attended by over 100 people including relatives of the victims from the UK and Canada.
