The new regime has promised to cut the US Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in order to increase funding to “secure the southern border and to crack down on illegal immigration,” according to the Coastal newspaper, the News-Times of Newport, OR. This will eliminate many jobs in the area and will diminish the Coast Guard’s lifesaving functions. In addition the cuts will eliminate the Oregon Sea Grant program that monitors oceanic and coastal problems. The elimination of the Sea Grant is part of the administration’s “salvo against science,” according to Oregon Senator Wyden.
