Old Custom House
Within Bowling Basin it is good to see that the Old Customs House is well maintained. Now used as the Canal Offices, the building dates back to circa 1800 and is a reminder of the past commercial importance of the waterway.
The opening of the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway in 1896 necessitated extensive accommodation works to the Forth and Clyde Canal at Bowling Basin. A massive railway swing bridge was built over the original lock and a completely new lock and inner basin were provided.
