Qasr al Kharaneh

We had a very impressive extra day. We went along the road to Iraq and Saudi Arabia and visited four of the most spectacular desert palaces. Some of these monuments date back to Roman and Byzantine times, others were built or altered and expanded in the eighth century under the Umayyad Kalif. My favourite is this one, it's a two storey building and an inscription in Arabic language is dated to the year 710 A.D. It looks like a fort, but it is believed that it was a Khan - an inn. If it's true then apparently it would have been the earliest known Khan in the Islamic world.
By the way the strike is over, so tomorrow we'll be off to Berlin.
