#SWINGIEST

I came across this today, returning from a meeting across the Ship Canal.

A board explained that it is a temporary installation (it will  be removed after this month I think), sitting on top of the remnant of James Brindley's stone aqueduct of 1761, which carried the Bridgewater Canal across the River Irwell. A technological achievement of its time, in part replaced in 1893 when the Ship Canal was built, requiring a new swing aqueduct to be added.

What you can see here is an assemblage of 2000 knitted and crocheted squares, made by 70 Salford ladies, and stitched together to form four foot high letters celebrating the aqueduct. The designs use features of the canal, including stone mason mason marks - some of which can be seen on the top stones if this photo is enlarged (I can count six).

I have checked, and "swingiest" is a word accepted in the game of scrabble. So there !
