Bowes Museum
A bit of a drive today, but we broke it with a stop at the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle. Even though I was brought up only about 50 miles away, because we didn't have a car when I was a kid I had never visited before. The museum was purpose-built in the 1800's in the style of a French Chateau to house the collection of John Bowes and his French wife, Joséphine. An interesting collection of works including some very well known paintings, and a superb temporary exhibition of street photography from the 1960's by Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr. Well worth a visit if you happen to be nearby.
