Detour

To the Bridgewater Hall to see Elvis Costello, in his solo tour called "Detour."  He was on stage for almost three hours, playing the piano, seven guitars (not all at once) and a ukulele. Highlights included a dark, thunderous version of Watching the Detectives; a delightful, tender performance of Alison, in which he dispensed entirely with microphones and amplification - using the Hall's excellent acoustics; and my favourite Elvis C song - Shipbuilding.

He also paid tribute to Chuck Berry, performing a version of "No Particular Place to Go" with a guitar that Berry had used.

A fine gig, by a great songwriter, energetic performer and all round good guy.
