"Up Spirits"
For several hundred years sailors in the Royal Navy used to have a daily issue (tot) of Navy rum measuring 1/8 of an imperial pint (70 ml) which was 95.5 proof. Junior ranks rum would be diluted with 2 parts water and each man would receive 3/8 of a pint (210ml) known as "Grog".
All the rum for the crew was mixed in a particular barrel called the rum tub which was made of Oak and ornately decorated with the words "The Queen God Bless Her" On the command "Up Spirits" it was collected by a member of each mess who distributed to all those drawing their tot. Those who didn't draw their tot were paid 3p extra.
All this ended on 31st July 1970 when the last tot was drawn!!
My extra picture today is me enjoying my tot to the toast;
The wind that blows
The ship that goes
And the lass that loved a sailor
