Colourful City

This morning we took the shuttle bus down the hill to Funchal.  We particularly wanted to visit the old town and one street where local artists have been encouraged to paint the doors to attract more people into an otherwise rundown part of the town.  This peacock was one of  my favourites, along with a couple of others that you can see in Extras.

We also visited the market which was filled with stalls of exotic flowers and fruit - many of which we couldn't identify but there seemed to be about six different varieties of passion fruit on sale - each a different shape and colour.  The fish market was also interesting, the stalls selling, amongst other things, black scabbard (a local fish), bright red parrot fish and huge tuna.

We finished our visit with a trip around Blandy's - the Maderia wine producers.  It was fascinating to hear about the production process.  The oldest barrel of wine they have aging dates from 1920!
