Traces of Past Empires

Entrance to Hotel de Ville, Geneva

The 15th Century Hotel de Ville, in the Old City of Geneva, still serves as the seat of government of the Canton of Geneva.

The Hotel de Ville was where the Geneva Convention was held in 1864, and the League of Nations was founded here in 1920.

The three flags flying here are the flag of the Swiss Confederation, the UN flag and the flag of the Republic and Canton of Geneva.

Under the flags, above the door-way is a carved two headed Imperial Holy Roman eagle, symbolising the city's imperial freedom.

The cantonal flag is half the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and one of the two keys of St Peter - the later dating back to the old bishopric of Geneva in the Middle Ages.
