Comparing light at different times of the day

This is not meant to be a 'good' photograph!

At the camera club we are looking at ways to help the less confident members with ideas and hints on different aspects of photography.  I, and one of the other members, have been asked to think about  how a scene might appear in different lighting conditions.  I have photographed this tree previously shortly after dawn, so for comparison I had a go at the same scene in afternoon light.
