In Search of Clapper Bridges
A clapper is a flat stone. Clapper bridges are comprised of flat granite slabs, or imposts, supported at either end by stone piers. The imposts rest under gravity alone without any fixings. John Stuart, an enthusiast for the clapper bridge, has found at least 214 on Dartmoor. Today we led a walk looking for sixteen of them starting with the best at Postbridge. We found them but it was a torrid affair of mud, swamp, and gorse.
