Why can't children pick their stuff up off the floor?

Little Miss S had practically a whole day of football. Training before school, school match where she scored three goals and then training this evening. We ended up getting fish and chips at nearly 8 o'clock as there was no time to cook between matches and training. She was starving by the time we sat down to eat.
