Hurst Lighthouse and Ferry at Hurst Point
Had an envigorating walk from Milford via the coastal path to Hurst Castle . It was hardgoing along the 1.5 mile Hurst spit, an artifically bolstered shingle bar that separates the sea (the Solent) from the saltmarsh and mudflats.
Hurst Castle was built by Henry V111 as a coastal fortress and was completed in1544. Charles 1 was imprisoned here in 1648 before being taken to London for his execution.
Further additions were made in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today it was closed but we were able to explore the exterior.
My extra is the spit with the castle in the background.
Hurst Lighthouse was built in 1867, replacing an earlier one. and is still working today.
