FIGGY's Sporadic Blips

Noche del Vino

is a popular annual fiesta in Cómpeta which pays homage to the towns patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the grape harvest begins. Each year on 15 August locals and visitors enjoy a programme of flamenco and sevillana music and celebrate the harvest.

Since 1974 free samples of the local wine have been enjoyed by revelers and it has become one of the Axarquia's most important annual events. More than 1,500 litres of wine is shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta.

The festivities start early in the day and continue late into the night and include the foot treading of the first crop of locally collected grapes which are brought ceremoniously into the town in baskets carried on the heads of two local townsmen. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food.

Over 300 litres of oil is used to prepare migas, a traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol.

The picture shows a group of flamenco dancers and musicians waiting for the festivities to start.

Backblipped 9 - 15 August - hope you enjoy a taste of Andalucia.
