Falasgair

A familiar site at this time of year in Scotland. Falasgair is the gaelic term for the burning of the heather and grass. It is meant to improve the land for the birds as well as discourage growth of the gorse and other shrubs which get in the way of shooting and grazing. However I'm sure there must be wildlife displaced by this process which doesn't seem to equate in my mind.

This was just across the loch from us and I watched in amazement at the hillside set alight. Main photo was taken just after noon and I've included an extra from 8pm showing some of the trees still lit up - not sure they were meant to be included in the exercise. As there is no rain forecast for a few days, I expect it will still be smoking away tomorrow.
