Red sky at night
Today's the day ........................... for a mackerel sky
We've had this sort of sky all day here - but when it started going every shade of pink I just had to rush out and capture it.
I think it is called a mackerel sky because the pattern resembles the scales on a mackerel - and there are several sayings about what sort of weather will follow these clouds.
For example - 'Mackerel in the sky, three days dry' or 'Mackerel sky, mackerel sky. Never long wet and never long dry'. And then there's the nautical one 'Mare's tails and mackerel scales, Make tall ships carry low sails' which means that things are going to get windy.
I'd be quite happy with the 'three days dry' one ..........................
