Monument on the dike...
The twin villages Paesens and Moddergat had a large fishing fleet in the 19th century. In the night of 5 to March 6, 1883 a disaster took place for the community. During a heavy storm 17 "blazers" en "aken"(shiptypes) wrecked and 83 villagers died in the disaster at sea. Commemorating a monument was erected on the seafront in 1958 with the names of the persons on the monument. Even today it is still an important source of income in the fishing villages. The ships are now located in the Port of Lauwersoog
