Tank Traps Saltcoats

Apparently during world war II there was concern that tanks could make a beach landing at Saltcoats and Ardrossan  (wide shallow bay). In the event of an attack, the covers would have been removed, and steel girders fixed into the holes, blocking the width of the road. Tanks attempting to drive over the girders would become trapped when the girder caught on their underside lifting the tracks off the road. Trapped tanks would halt the progress of those following along behind.
