Keeping the riff raff out.
 Come to think of it, where does "Riff Raff" come from. There is this suggestion on the internet:- C15 rif and raf, from Old French rif et raf; related to rifler to plunder, and rafle a sweeping up.

 Also of interest is the fact that about 6 months ago the Council gardeners grassed over the flower beds. There was uproar on the "Tonbridge Daily" FaceBook page.  The beds were very quickly replaced citing "an error".  This is the most touristy bit of the town , surely they can afford the flower beds here!
