The barn owl
I was back in Broxburn today, the town of my birth and where I spent my first 6 years. The canal runs at 90° across the main street and as a child I was brought up to be very careful around it - to the extent that until early adulthood I viewed a canal as a sinister place!
I also misheard the name and apparently called them barnowls when a child, that must have caused me great confusion when I first met the feathered version.
Thankfully I have now quite overcome my fear to the extent that I can walk beside one quite calmly and have even been on a barge several times!
The Union Canal here looks very peaceful and the extra, showing the other side of the bridge at Port Buchan, looks similarly calm and comes complete with swan and barges. What a relief!
